Geospatial technology is broadly defined as the field of gathering, interpreting and distributing geographical and spatial data. Imperative for mapping, geospatial technology has become integrated in nearly every aspect of daily life. As geospatial activities have grown in importance, so has South Mississippi’s role in the industry.
The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Geospatial Center, located in Gulfport, provides coastal geospatial information, research and applications to benefit the public and private sectors of the communities it serves.
NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County is a leader for the Coast’s geospatial activities. It is the location of federal labs that are involved in geospatial-related RDT&E activities run by NASA, the Department of Defense and the Department of Commerce. Today, there are 25 geospatial companies at or near Stennis Space Center, and a dozen other geospatial companies located elsewhere in the state.
Mississippi Enterprise for Technology (MsET), located at Stennis Space Center, works with the Enterprise for Innovative Geospatial Solutions, university research programs, state agencies and other related organizations to coordinate and nurture the growth of the geospatial industry cluster.
