Second Senior Prom is “An Evening to Remember”
More than 900 guests celebrated the spirit of community and life at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Retiree Partnership’s Second Annual Senior Prom on November 20 at the IP Casino Resort & Spa in Biloxi, which again hosted and co-sponsored the event.
Area residents who had celebrated 50 or more birthdays danced to the 20-piece Coast Big Band featuring David Delk and enjoyed a full night of festivities. The music, food, prom photos, prizes and fun were all compliments of area sponsors including Biloxi Regional Medical Center, Harrison County Board of Supervisors and Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. A prom king, queen and court were chosen, and drawings were held for prizes – one $1,000 and two $500 Visa gift cards.
Local officials, including Gulfport Mayor Brent Warr and several county supervisors, joined in the evening’s activities. A City Proclamation honoring the prom and senior citizens was presented by Mayor Warr.
In their dress uniforms, more than 50 military volunteers from nearby Keesler Air Force Base, the Naval Construction Battalion Center and other installations helped pin on corsages, escorted guests to tables, acted as greeters and danced with the single men and women.
Overall, the event was a tremendous success. This year the prom committee planned for a maximum of 800 participants, but ended up with between 900 and 950 guests.
The Retiree Partnership, under the auspices of the Harrison County Development Commission, works with the State of Mississippi’s official retiree attraction program, Hometown Mississippi Retirement, as one of 21 Certified Retirement Communities across the state.
Since 1995, the Retiree Partnership and its volunteers, known as Hometown Ambassadors, have marketed the Gulf Coast as a retirement destination. As part of the organization’s effort to enhance the quality of life for our retirees, the Retiree Partnership organizes special events geared toward making the senior population feel welcome, while promoting the many benefits of living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The Second Annual Harrison County Senior Prom was a way to say thank you to those who contribute in so many priceless ways to the unique fabric of life that is shared on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
