CH2M Hill Designs Port of the Future

The Mississippi State Port at Gulfport, currently the third busiest container port on the Gulf of Mexico, is on its way to becoming the “Port of the Future.” With an approved plan by CH2M Hill and $570 million allocated for the development of the plan, the port will one day be the largest shipping facility in the gulf.

The port has a 10-year vision plan, broken down into four phases, which CH2M Hill estimates will result in a capacity of 3 million TEU. For many involved, including Executive Director of the Mississippi State Port Authority Don Allee, the vision extends far beyond the 10 years, and the port is seen as an economic engine of the future.

“When you compare the Port at Gulfport’s rebuild to similar projects, it is expected to create 6,500 direct jobs, 8,400 induced jobs and 1,700 indirect jobs,” said Allee. “It is also expected to generate annual revenue of $10 billion in added personal income and $1.6 billion in annual direct revenue to the local economy.”
