Metal Tech, Inc., a South Mississippi company specializing in the manufacture of state-of-the-art fabricated parts and machines, was opened in 1999 by Mike Funk as an offshoot of his father Charlie’s company, Metal Parts. Together with his brother, Karl Funk, and third partner, Jeff Mattina, Mike Funk has seen Metal Parts grow to over 50 employees, with a record year in 2008.
Charlie Funk spent years working in metal parts production and designed a special material consisting of exotic alloys that, when applied to metal, creates an abrasive surface that increases the resistance of wear and tear on that part. The product is still used today as an important part of Metal Tech’s “Wear Control Technology.”
Described as a “job shop” by Mike Funk, Metal Tech is able to design and produce unique parts per a company’s specifications on an as-needed basis, even with immediate deadlines. Examples of these parts and machines include plates, sheets, pipes and chutes that can be employed in various capacities, including mining, dredging, chemical use, wood and paper pulping, and cement, oil and gas applications.
Metal Tech has two locations, Gulfport and Perkinston. Gulfport’s 17,000-square-foot facility sits on four acres and consists of a fabrication and welding shop. The site in Perkinston is comprised of over seven acres and has a 10,000-square-foot machine shop, which employs a Computer and Numerical Control (CNC) device to cut metal.
Between its two facilities, Metal Tech is able to serve a vast customer base that includes DuPont, Southern Company, International Paper, BASF Catalysts, L.L.C. in Jackson, Miss. and Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation.
With its project flexibility, “Wear Control Technology,” and ability to meet impossible time restraints, Metal Tech, Inc. will continue its success in South Mississippi.
