Tucked away on the back roads of Hancock County, Mississippi’s first brewery is operating at full steam. The Lazy Magnolia Brewery has made it onto the beer map as a market contender, not to mention they are second only to FEB Distributing’s anchor brands (Miller/Coors) in sales. The owners and visionaries behind the operation are Mark and Leslie Henderson, native Mississippians.
In late October, Roy Anderson Corp, the South Mississippi Contract Procurement Center (SMCPC), eCom Direct, the Mississippi Development Authority and the Surety & Fidelity Association of America started the Model Contractor Development Program (MCDP) in Gulfport, Mississippi. Running through December 16, the program will teach small construction contractors the good business practices needed to improve their company’s operations, increase their bonding capacity and help take advantage of the ongoing construction boom in Mississippi.
In South Mississippi, small businesses recently had an opportunity to gain valuable business support, knowledge and networking at the first Small Business Resource Conference at The Innovation Center in Biloxi.
More than 900 guests celebrated the spirit of community and life at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Retiree Partnership’s Second Annual Senior Prom on November 20 at the IP Casino Resort & Spa in Biloxi, which again hosted and co-sponsored the event.
Since his appointment by Governor Haley Barbour in late August, Mississippi Gulf Coast Housing Director Gerald Blessey has been dedicating his time to working with local residents, nonprofit agencies, government officials, advocates and other organizations to expedite the development of affordable workforce housing in the three coastal Mississippi counties, Hancock, Harrison and Jackson.
Target, PetSmart, Marshalls Department Store and Best Buy are among the retailers that are taking advantage of the easy accessibility and great visibility of the intersection of interstates 10 and 110 in D’Iberville, Mississippi. These retailers, along with national eateries Red Lobster and Olive Garden, will soon gather in The Promenade, a 700,000 square-foot shopping center which broke ground in the city in July of this year.

YouthBuild, a youth and community development program that addresses core issues facing low-income communities, has created a permanent YouthBuild AmeriCorps program in Gulfport, Mississippi. The YouthBuild AmeriCorps Katrina Rebuilding Project program aims to serve the Gulf Coast community for the long-term and to guide the participation of local youth in the ongoing reconstruction of their community, as well as their lives, including joint activities with the other YouthBuild programs and local community partners.
Along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, from Waveland to Pascagoula, more than 4,000 antique, classic and hot rod car owners participated in the 12th Annual Cruisin’ the Coast, a weeklong car show that continues to grow exponentially each year.
The Innovation Center in Biloxi, Mississippi is dedicated to nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit on the Gulf Coast and beyond.
